Graham, thank you for trying out the beta. This issue is fixed in the second beta which will be released this weekend.
The new component require jQuery 1.7 to function, so your existing corejoomla jquery plugin will not work. I will upload the new plugin soon. You can replace existing jquery 1.5.1 library with latest one from jquery site as well.
You should not install the beta on production system. 30 days is good time for the stable release, although it depends on how many bugs comes.
The polls anywhere scripts should present in components/com_communitypolls/assets/anywhere folder. But you will not use it directly. View the poll that you want anywhere code, and you can see the Share link below the poll. Click on it and you can get the embedding script.
